During a recent event in Lagos, Nigeria, The Prostate Clinic (TPC) celebrated its first anniversary by announcing the completion of 100 robotic-assisted prostatectomies in the treatment of prostate cancer.
According to TPC Medical Director, Prof. Kingsley Ekwueme, the milestone reflects both the clinic's efforts to increase awareness around early testing and the rising demand for advanced treatment options.
The clinic’s first year highlights how quickly the treatment landscape can evolve when advanced surgical capability is available locally. Patients who would previously have been forced to travel abroad for care are now undergoing minimally invasive robotic procedures in Lagos.
The impact is also being felt beyond Nigeria. In its first year, TPC has attracted patients from across West Africa as well as from countries including the United Kingdom, United States, and Canada, signaling a growing confidence in the quality of care available locally. As Prof. Ekwueme proudly noted, "The number is important, but what matters most is that these surgeries were done safely."
One of the biggest challenges facing prostate cancer care in Nigeria is not just incidence, but timing. During the event, it was shared that more than 80% of Nigerian men who are diagnosed present at advanced stages, when treatment options are significantly more limited.
According to Ekwueme, lowering that figure requires additional awareness, early screenings, and access to quality care.
The Prostate Clinic is not looking to slow down anytime soon. In January, TPC recorded West Africa's first robotic gynecological surgery, further expanding the region's medical capabilities.
Plans are underway for a new dedicated robotic center in Imo State, representing the first in Nigeria and Africa. The clinic is also exploring research focused on African genetic profiles, with the goal of developing more tailored and effective treatments for Black patients. Ekwueme shared, "We have started the journey. Now we must expand it so more lives can be saved."
R2 Surgical is proud to partner with Prof. Ekwueme and The Prostate Clinic to expand surgical access in Nigeria, West Africa, and beyond.
