The Basics

Traditional neurosurgery has long relied on craniotomy procedures, which are highly invasive, often leading to extended recovery times, discomfort, and noticeable scarring.

Enter ROSA ONE®, a groundbreaking robotic solution developed by Zimmer Biomet to empower surgeons in executing complex neurosurgical interventions through a minimally invasive approach. Unlike the conventional craniotomy, ROSA ONE leverages advanced robotic technology to guide surgeons through a small hole in the skull, significantly reducing the invasiveness of procedures. This not only means smaller incisions but also the potential for increased patient comfort.

One of the remarkable features of ROSA ONE is that the surgical process commences even before the surgeon enters the operating room. By meticulously creating a surgical plan ahead of time, operating room time and patient anesthesia time can be optimized. The robotic arm of ROSA ONE is ingeniously engineered with six degrees of freedom, allowing for exceptional precision and adaptability when accessing surgical sites. Once the trajectory is set, the rigidity of the robotic arm minimizes unintended movements.

ROSA ONE also introduces haptic technology, effectively creating a seamless interface between surgeon and machine. It's important to note that the robotic technology doesn't replace the surgeon's skill but rather enhances it. The exceptional accuracy offered by ROSA ONE's robotic arm positions it as an ideal platform for neurosurgery, ensuring precise instrument placement while avoiding critical structures. Moreover, the rapid movement capabilities of the robot between trajectories can result in significant time savings during procedures involving multiple implants.

A distinctive aspect of ROSA ONE is its dual functionality, serving both brain and spine surgeries. This versatility could potentially reduce technology acquisition costs and streamline service, repair, and education processes.

Here's how ROSA ONE's process works:

Step 1: Pre-Operative Planning Surgeons utilize advanced planning software to create intricate 3D maps of the patient's brain. By analyzing brain images from various angles, surgeons devise effective surgical strategies. ROSA ONE essentially operates as a surgical GPS, expertly guiding surgeons toward the intended targets while steering clear of critical structures.

Step 2: Minimally Invasive Registration ROSATM employs contactless registration technology, combining laser sensors with the robotic arm to accurately record the patient's position and anatomy. Detailed scans of the patient's facial features are executed, with the scans matched to pre-operative images. This method enables registration without the need for invasive landmarks. Traditional registration methods, such as skin or bone fiducials, can also be used. This approach optimizes workflow by segmenting image acquisition, planning, and operative phases, allowing imaging and planning to be completed before the surgery day.

Step 3: Accurate Robotic Guidance Robotic technology comes into play by guiding surgical instruments based on the pre-operative mapping and registration. The robot's advanced haptic manipulation enables it to seamlessly integrate into the surgeon's workflow, enhancing the surgical process. ROSA ONE's assisted navigation capabilities enable surgeons to visualize instruments in real time on patient imaging.

ROSA ONE supports an array of neurosurgical procedures, including Stereo Electroencephalography (SEEG), Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), Stereotactic Biopsy, Ventricular Endoscopy, and Transnasal Endoscopy.
